Spring Fling Challenge Complete!

I completed 77.59 miles of trail hikes from March 1st– May 31st!

Here’s a bit about each place we visited in the last month of the challenge:

Cudahy Woods State Natural Area

This is one of our local favorites. It isn’t the longest trail, but it’s full of gorgeous towering trees. Even on a good day, when I am watching where I am walking, I still trip over countless roots and rocks.

But in this place, my constant gaping up at the tall trees made it a minor miracle that I got out without any major bumps or bruises!

Oak Leaf Trail (Froemming Park/Root River Parkway)

I still enjoyed myself – and in the areas along the Root River, there were a bunch of little unpaved paths to check out, so we still got the feeling of exploration!

This one wasn’t my first choice for the day, only because I don’t love paved trails. But morning rain made us opt for the paved route to avoid the mud.

Lapham Peak State Park – Kettle View Trail

The view from the tower

This is a very typical Kettle Moraine trail, lots of ups and downs. 6 miles of that made for an excellent workout!

And lots of amusingly named trails ("Asthma Hill", "The Gut Buster") Those names were pretty accurate, so I was grateful it was relatively cool that day – perfect hiking weather!

Warnimont Park

This was a revisit, as we had just discovered it the previous month. But there was much we didn’t have time to explore then, and even after our second visit, there is still more to see.

It felt just as magical to me this time. It’s only a few minutes away, so I am sure I’ll be getting back there regularly!

Kohler Andrae State Park

This was a great place to end our challenge on! This place feels different than any of our other favorite lakeshore parks. A “cordwalk” trail (essentially a boardwalk connected with cords) traverses the dunes.

It’s so much fun to hike the cordwalk; it kind of makes you feel like a kid!

We had the perfect weather for that day. You want to make sure that it’s not too hot when you go here, since you are in full sun for most of it. But there is a steady, cool lake breeze the whole time that makes it doable, even with the sun beating down.

This final month was definitely tough – though the weather started to warm up, we had to contend with badly timed rain. And we had schedule challenges, so we had to do a few smaller evening hikes to get our miles in. But I am proud that we persevered!

And I'm apparently also a bit nutty…because I immediately signed up for the Blazing Summer Trail Challenge! Stay tuned! 😊

Do you have any favorites, any places I absolutely need to hike? I’m always looking for suggestions, especially now that I’ve signed up for another challenge! Comment below, or contact me – I’d love to hear from you!

Hey, I'm Deanna!

I'll start with the typical introductory details - I live in Wisconsin and work as an Administrative Assistant for a non-profit organization - but those are the least interesting things about me!

I love reading (theology, spiritual formation, biographies), baking and cooking, hiking and exploring the the beauty God has created - in all 4 seasons! All of these things bring me life, and they are all things I will be writing about here - so if any of that is interesting to you, subscribe and stick around for a while!
